As the course meanders through the tree lined fairways, each hole offers a different challenge as well as its own unique charm. It demands a drive combining distance, accuracy, nerves of steel and is sure to set the pulse racing. Little wonder it is recognized as the toughest par 4 in Sri Lanka. Nuwara Eliya Golf Club - since 1891
Walking distance from the town center, Nestled 6200 meters above sea level, amid the tea plantations of the central highlands, Nuwara Eliya is a charming hill station developed by British planters in the late 1800s. It is easy to see why they chose to settle here. Nuwara Eliya is an area of great natural beauty and pleasant climate. Testaments to the town’s British history are such institutions as the Racecourse, Hill Club and the attractive Nuwara Eliya Golf Club.
This magnificent course was built by a Scottish soldier of the Golan Highlanders for the British serviceman and officials stationed here in 1889. It remains a well-kept and challenging golf course set in stunning surroundings. Occasionally you may feel you are playing golf back in the British Isles, but the course holds many features unique to Sri Lanka. Whether it is your helpful caddie and his Sri Lankan smile, or the course’s flora and fauna you’ll be in no doubt you in one of Asia’s beautiful corners.
Royal Colombo Golf Club
Built in 1879, Royal Colombo Golf Club was only the second club in the world to receive the royal charter; and it is worthy of this accolade. It is a tight and challenging 5,770 meter course that rewards both strategic defensive golf and long hitting. The fairways are inviting but unless accurate off the tee huge trees and other obstacles will hinder your second shot. If the monstrous trees are not enough, the course also entertains 13 well placed water traps.
From the very 1st hole, where a lake protects the green, water comes into play. These hazards are also home to a number of local giant monitor lizards.
The 120 year old club is situated within the city limits. Occasional trains on the Kelani Valley Railway line running through the course make it one of a kind course.
The clubhouse is a reminder of colonial times and a bygone era. The teak paneled Governors Bar has a selection of wines, and the cool veranda is a delightful place to enjoy a drink and discuss your round. There is also a wide ranging menu to choose from. There is a well stocked pro shop with a selection of clubs and bags to hire. It is also worth noting the course is ‘soft spike’ only. These are available from the golf shop near the entrance to the club and the pro shop. As you would expect with a club as prestigious as this, there is the usual golf club dress code to be adhered to, both on the course and in the clubhouse.
